Crafting a Masterpiece – A 5-Way Mitred Hip Roof with Spanish Slate

N Brayley Roofing & Building • January 23, 2025

At N Brayley Roofing & Building, we pride ourselves on tackling complex roofing challenges with precision and expertise.

One of our recent projects—a stunning 5-way mitred hip roof using Spanish natural slate—showcases the skill and craftsmanship that goes into creating a truly unique feature.

This type of roof is not just about practicality; it’s about achieving a striking visual statement while ensuring long-lasting durability. The job, completed on a historic Isle of Wight property, demonstrates the high level of detail and care required to make this intricate design come to life.

What Makes a 5-Way Mitred Hip Special?

A 5-way mitred hip roof is no ordinary roofing task. It involves the seamless convergence of five roof planes at a single point, creating a clean, symmetrical appearance. Achieving this requires painstaking precision, from calculating the angles to cutting and placing each slate.

Nigel Brayley, owner of N Brayley Roofing & Building, explains:

"It’s not something you come across every day. A 5-way mitred hip demands absolute accuracy at every stage of the process. Each slate has to be custom-cut to fit perfectly, and there’s no room for error. But when it all comes together, the result is spectacular.”

The Steps Behind the Craftsmanship

The process began with careful planning and measurement. The intersection of five roof planes meant that every angle had to be calculated with precision to ensure a seamless fit. Chalk lines were drawn from the apex of the roof to guide the placement of the mitred ridge and hip sections.

Next came the cutting of the Spanish slates. These natural slates, renowned for their beauty and durability, were custom-cut to match the specific angles required. Using specialised tools, the team ensured that each slate fit perfectly, leaving no gaps or uneven edges.

To make the roof watertight, metal soakers were installed beneath the mitred slates, providing a crucial barrier against water ingress. Lead saddles were also incorporated at the ridge-to-hip intersections to guarantee long-term waterproofing.

Nigel notes:

"The waterproofing is just as important as the aesthetics. With so many planes meeting at a single point, it’s essential to get the detailing right. Any weak spot could lead to leaks down the line, so we always take extra care to make sure everything is sealed properly."

Challenges and Triumphs

This project wasn’t without its challenges. The intricate angles of the 5-way mitred hip required exceptional attention to detail, and the team had to work meticulously to maintain consistency across all intersecting planes.

The biggest challenge is getting everything to line up perfectly,” says Nigel. “If one slate is even slightly out, it throws off the whole design. It’s a real test of skill, but that’s what makes these projects so rewarding.”

Despite the complexities, the final result is a roof that blends functionality with artistry. The clean lines of the mitred hip, paired with the natural texture of the Spanish slate, create a finish that is as durable as it is visually stunning.

A Testament to Quality Craftsmanship

This 5-way mitred hip roof is more than just a structural feature—it’s a testament to the craftsmanship and dedication that N Brayley Roofing & Building brings to every project.
